how could i forget?

how could i forget a summer like that? i remember walking to the corner store to get salt water taffy & catfishes sandwhiches. you'd pick out all the butterscotch (i hated butterscotch) & let me keep the rest. & we went swimming in the bayou. you taught me how to fish but i've forgotten by now. this was the summer i fell in love with being barefoot. there was so much history in that city -- in that home alone. architecture & rod iron. i remember the humidity, the smell of bay leaves in the evening, the screen doors. we'd laugh together about my "strawberry blone halo", the way the sun hit my hair just before the moon crept up.

things were different then. i was young but i was free. & you let me fly.

then the hurricane came.
